Japanese Book Drill

Here's one of my favorite tools -- the Japanese Book Drill, also known as a Japanese Screw Punch!  This one comes complete with all seven drill bits!

(NEW 5.0mm bit available separately! Scroll to the bottom of this page for information about the new, larger bit.)

This handy book drill makes book-binding a breeze!
With just light downward pressure, the shaft spins the
drill bit, making beautifully smooth holes in

* paper and cardstock
* leather,
* mat board,
* illustration board, and
* book board!

This is the genuine Japanese screw punch (not the knock-off). The genuine Japanese screw punch has the patent number or the words "screw punch made in Japan"  etched on the brass shaft.  The genuine screw punch is a very well-made product, with a maple wood handle and a brass shaft.

Because you only need one hand to use the drill, the other hand is free to hold the paper firm.  You can easily drill a small stack of paper or card stock at once (and then round the corners with the Lite-Touch PRO Corner Rounder!).  When I took mine out of the box, I drilled a hole in the center of magazine with three easy pushes -- it took only seconds!  You can drill through 16 sheets of paper (I tested this on a legal pad) at once.

The Japanese Book Drill with seven hollow point bits -- in sizes 1mm,1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm -- will give you an incredible array of choices for book binding.  The smallest bits are great for waxed threads like those used in Japanese stab binding, and the larger bits will allow the use of book posts, leather cord, and other thick binding media.

Bits are separate and easily interchangeable, and not on a rotary wheel like leather hole punches. And unlike drill presses, this will drill holes anywhere on a page, not just at the edge of the paper. (It's perfect for drilling clock centers, for example.)  This is much easier to use than I expected -- a very versatile tool!

It is a great tool for those of you who own my Spiral Coil Binding System, because with the Japanese book drill, you can drill holes in heavier materials such as mat board and book board for your book covers.
